“We strive to be global citizens with local responsibilities”

Our Utah-based programs are directed by Johanna Estrada johanna@onehourforlife.org

Refugee Clinic Collaboration

In collaboration with the student-run Refugee Health Clinic at the University of Utah, we are working to design and a preventive health curriculum that can be effectively taught to patients in under 5 minutes while they are waiting for their clinic appointment.

Somali Cooking Series

These classes highlight some of the difficulties of moving to a new culture and promote smart shopping, healthy food choices, and cooking tips. We worked together with the community to develop a curriculum to effectively bridge cultural barriers and promote influential and long lasting partnership. This program is designed to eventually lead toward clinical interventions and providing this population better access to healthcare.

Preventive Health and Cooking

We partner with the Community Learning Center in Murray, Utah to teach preventive health and nutrition to a community of under-represented families. These educational courses are free for anyone to attend and connect members of the University of Utah School of Medicine, Nutrition Department and local community members. We work together to promote healthy lifestyles, nutritional cooking methods, and effective strategies to raising families in Utah.

Active Lifestyles and Prevention by Example

Did you know that 2/3 of the causes of cancer are due to smoking, obesity, and sedentary lives?

OHL is involved with community activities that promote healthy lifestyles. Previously, we partnered with organizations such as Racing with Passion, REAL Salt Lake, WAKA Kickball, Beehive Sports and Social Club, Wasatch Roller Derby, and Sprouts Farmers Market to promote healthy living and activity!
